Cómo afecta el calor a nuestras mascotas

 

Los animales, al igual que sucede en los seres humanos, también sufren las altas temperaturas. Las altas temperaturas pueden llevar muertes súbitas, sobre todo en aquellas razas más susceptibles como bulldogs, bóxers o mascotas obesas. Sin embargo, ninguna mascota está ausente de riesgos ante las altas temperaturas.

Aunque lo más común es que los perros sean las mascotas más afectadas, las altas temperaturas no sólo pueden causar problemas en ellos sino que también muchas otras especies se pueden ver afectadas.

Los conejos, por ejemplo, son especies que toleran muy bien el frío y construyen madrigueras muy cálidas y confortables. Pero el calor nos puede jugar una mala pasada y provocar graves problemas de salud en estas especies. Es muy importante no dejar las jaulas de los conejos a la intemperie en las horas de más calor.

Las aves son otras mascotas que pueden verse afectadas por el calor. En este caso, las aves tropicales están más acostumbradas a las altas temperaturas pero debe ir ligado de un alto porcentaje de humedad. El calor puede provocar alteraciones en las puestas así como problemas respiratorios en los pájaros.

Una vez comienzan a subir las temperaturas debemos tomar una serie de precauciones para evitar males mayores. Es importante no sacar a pasear a nuestras mascotas en las horas más fuertes de calor. Intentaremos sacarlas a primera hora de la mañana y última hora de la tarde o noche. Siempre que salimos a pasear, llevaremos una botella de agua y un recipiente para que la mascota pueda beber.

Si por lo que fuera sospecháramos que nuestra mascota está sufriendo un golpe de calor, nunca debemos rociarlos con agua dado que la imposibilidad de transpirar por la piel todavía hará subir más la temperatura. Lo más adecuado es mojar las almohadillas con agua fría y contactar rápidamente con un veterinario.
